Metra high on Highliner electric cars

Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) recently took delivery of the first of 26 new Highliner commuter cars, which will operate on the Metra Electric District route between Chicago’s Randolph Street and south suburban University Park.

Built by Sumitomo Corp. of America and partner Nippon Sharyo under a $76.5 million contract, the stainless-steel cars feature larger windows, more comfortable seats, brighter lighting, reversible seatbacks, non-skid floors, and an improved public-address system compared with cars currently in service.

The cars will be delivered through February 2006. The order is the first under Metra’s plan to replace all 165 of its Highliner cars, which began service in 1970.
