Metra launches public safety campaign

Following the recent deaths of three Chicago-area youths who were struck by trains, Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) has launched a public safety campaign — the agency’s most aggressive ever, according to a prepared statement.

During the safety blitz, Metra officials will ask all police agencies in the six-county service area to increase patrols and enforcement around railroad tracks, and detain trespassing youths and contact their parents.

The agency also will ask school superintendents to host assemblies to show students Metra’s rail safety presentations and read safety messages over the schools’ public address system during daily announcements.

Metra will continue to provide schools Operation Lifesaver train safety programs and presentations.

In addition, the agency will run 30-second public service announcements on local television stations, take out full-page ads in newspapers and distribute informational brochures to riders to encourage parents to talk to their children about train safety.
