Metra has been recognized by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) for an employee-produced newsletter that promotes safety and operational excellence among engineers and crew along its Chicago-area Rock Island Line.James Grogans, Metra's road foreman of engines, and J. J. Blonek, chair of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, worked to develop the monthly newsletter, known as "The Partnership," Metra officials said yesterday in a press release.The newsletter began in November 2014 as a four-page publication highlighting operational and safety tips, in addition to emphasizing the importance of holding proper job briefings, Metra officials said.The AAR award marks the third year in a row the agency has been recognized for safety best practices.Meanwhile, Metrolinx retained its distinction as one of Canada's Top Employers for Young People for the third consecutive year. The competition recognizes leaders in Canada who effectively recruit and retain younger employees, Metrolinx officials said in a press release.In the competition, employers were evaluated based on criteria relating to work atmosphere, physical workplace, the availability of co-op or work-study programs, mentorship opportunities, tuition assistance and others. The average age of employees was also taken into account, Metrolinx officials said.
