Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) recently awarded a contract to URS Corp. to provide construction-management services for North Central Service line improvements.

URS will be responsible for overall project management, and coordinating efforts with four consultants responsible for day-to-day project activities. URS will develop the project document/control system for the North Central Service line and future projects, according to a prepared statement. The North Central project is Metra’s first using complete project/document control with one software package.

Although service on the 46.2-mile Chicago-to-Antioch line began in 1996, growing ridership has prompted Metra to increase capacity from 10 to 22 trains.

Scheduled for completion in 2006, the $102.5 million project includes installing embankment, sub-ballast, ballast, track, culvert extensions, storm sewer, 11 bridges, signals, street crossings with signals, cross overs, platforms and platform extensions. Metra also plans to relocate utilities, demolish a yard office and build a new one.
