Metra to expand quiet cars to all lines

advertisement

Metra officials plan to expand the quiet car concept to all of the agency’s lines by June 6.

The decision follows a three-month pilot project on the Rock Island line. About 84 percent of Rock Island riders who responded to an online survey indicated strong support for the concept, according to Metra.

Quiet car rules require riders to mute electronic devices and refrain from talking on cell phones.

Metra plans to designate the second car from the locomotive and from the train’s end as quiet cars on trains with six or more cars during rush hour on all lines except for Metra Electric. On that line, only the second car from the engine will be a quiet car.

Quiet cars will be available on all inbound trains arriving in downtown Chicago before 9 a.m. and all outbound trains leaving downtown from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
