MTA Metro-North Railroad will increase weekday service to 89% of pre-pandemic levels beginning March 27, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials announced yesterday.
The change will restore 66 weekday trains on the commuter railroad's three East of Hudson lines, MTA officials said in a press release. The increase, which is part of the Way Ahead-Moving Forward strategic plan, will shorten travel times by up to 13 minutes at multiple stations and provide more rider capacity so that riders can remain spaced apart as the community continues to recover from the COVID-19 omicron variant.
Metro-North’s train schedule was last changed in August 2021, when service was increased to 82% of pre-pandemic levels.
The Yankee Clipper trains will also return to provide special game-day service to the Yankees/East 153rd Street Station for New York Yankees home games. Those trains will be restored on the East of Hudson lines, as well as shuttle trains between Grand Central Terminal and the Harlem/125th Street Station.
“We have been listening to our customers and the message is clear: They want more trains and seating capacity as well as faster trips,” said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi.
