MTA Metro-North Railroad has ordered for the Connecticut Department of Transportation six additional dual-mode locomotives from Siemens Mobility for use on the commuter railroad's network, adding to an initial order of 27 Siemens dual-mode locomotives in 2020.

Slated to be delivered through 2027, the new units will replace Metro-North's GE P32AC-DM locomotives, which have reached or exceeded their projected 25-year lifespan. The contract awarded to Siemens encompasses a total of up to 171 locomotives including all potential options, according to a Metro-North press release.

Siemens's dual-mode locomotives offer advancements over their predecessors, providing a lighter, more efficient and eco-friendly solution. The locomotives are capable of operating in both electric and diesel modes. They are built to current EPA Tier 4 standards for operation in the Park Avenue Tunnel and on third-rail territory across New York State.

The locomotives are manufactured at Siemens plant in Sacramento, California.
