Metro targets Somalian-speaking riders
advertisement
Minneapolis’ Metro Transit soon will be able to accommodate more foreign-language-speaking passengers when Somalian is programmed into 88 ticketing machines.
Recent census data showed more than 4,000 Somali immigrants live within one mile of Metro’s lines. The $117,000 project will add a fourth language to the machines; English, Spanish and Hmong already are available.
The ticketing machines are part of a contract Metro Transit awarded to Cubic Corp. last year to provide regional ticketing systems that accept smart cards for fare payment on the agency’s light-rail, rapid transit and bus system.
