Metro Transit-St. Louis and Sound Transit are beginning temporary single-track light-rail testing and maintenance this month.
Metro Transit-St. Louis is beginning a two-week pilot program to test single-car MetroLink train service. Normally operating on a two-car system, the single-car service will provide such advantages as better efficiency for security patrol, reduction of wear and tear and more efficient service suited for the current ridership level, agency officials said in a press release.
“We need to challenge ourselves as a transit agency to become more flexible as our ridership changes,” said Taulby Roach, president and CEO of Bi-State Development, which operates the Metro Transit-St. Louis system.
The single-car strategy has been previously implemented during major winter storms as an emergency measure to keep trains moving as ice accumulated on power wires.
Meanwhile, Sound Transit yesterday began four weeks of rail grinding maintenance on Link light-rail tracks along the 1 Line at the University of Washington Station and farther south, agency officials said in a press release.
