MTA Metro-North Railroad will host community forums in the East Bronx area of New York City later this month and next to provide the public with information on a proposal to introduce service in the east Bronx along Amtrak’s right of way.

The sessions will inform local residents of an ongoing Penn Station Access environmental assessment, including concepts for four proposed stations that would serve Morris Park, Coop City, Hunts Point and Parkchester, and connections to Penn Station, Westchester and Connecticut, Metro-North officials said in a prepared statement.

At two of the sessions, New York City Department of City Planning officials also will present the latest information on its sustainable communities study related to the proposed Morris Park and Parkchester station areas.

Metro-North officials have been preparing environmental analyses to consider the potential benefits and impacts if additional regional service was extended from the east-of-Hudson River service territory to Penn Station, New York and Manhattan’s west side. Proposed Penn Station Access service primarily would be provided by using existing infrastructure with some capital improvements, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) website.

In a parallel study, MTA is co-sponsoring a study of future rail operations in Penn Station with Metro-North and Long Island Railroad, Amtrak and New Jersey Transit. That study’s results will be considered with the Penn Station Access environmental review.
