Rail News: Passenger Rail
On Oct. 26, Metrolink carried its 100 millionth passenger — 14 years to the day that the agency launched commuter-rail service in southern California.
Metrolink officials had expected the railroad to reach the milestone next year, but 2006 ridership has been higher than expected. Year-to-date, ridership is up 8 percent compared with 2005.
The agency began operating three commuter-rail routes in 1992; today, Metrolink operates seven routes serving 54 stations and carries more than 1 million passengers each month on its 512-mile system.
