Metrolink is adding 32 weekday trains, a nearly 23% increase in service, to its schedule beginning Oct. 21.
The upcoming schedule change represents what Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle calls “Metrolink Reimagined” as it transitions from a commuter service to a regional Southern California passenger-rail service.
“To ensure Metrolink remains a valuable resource for the communities we serve, we are reimagining our role within our region’s broader transportation landscape,” said Kettle in a press release. “We’ll still be here for daily 9-to-5 commuters, but we’re expanding our model to better accommodate a diverse range of customers, including tourists and day-trippers, students and nontraditional workers.”
The new schedule also will make connections between lines in the six-county service area more streamlined. Wait times for most passengers transferring lines between counties will reduce, with most wait times being 10 to 20 minutes, Metrolink officials said.
The Orange County, San Bernardino and Inland Empire-Orange County (IEOC) lines will see the most significant changes. The San Bernardino Line is welcoming 16 new weekday trains, the Orange County Line will add seven trains for weekday trips and IEOC is gaining four trains.
