The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) announced it will begin construction to expand the Metrolink train layover facility at the Riverside-Downtown Station in California in early April.

The expanded facility will allow seven trains to be housed at the station overnight, two more than the facility’s current capacity.

The new facility will increase flexibility of the order that trains leave the station each morning and enable light maintenance work and fueling to be performed at the Riverside Station, rather than at other maintenance facilities, RCTC officials said in a press release.

Construction activity will include track improvements north of the station’s train platform; installation of drainage facilities, electrical systems, lighting fixtures, security fencing and access gates; utility relocations; and water and sewer connections.

Originally the work was scheduled to begin this week, but the construction start date has been delayed, an RCTC spokesperson told Progressive Railroading.

Work is expected to wrap up late this year. The station will remain open during construction, and Metrolink service will continue as scheduled.
