Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) have issued a request for qualifications for a team to build, design, finance, operate and maintain a major GO Transit rail expansion project.

The scope of work includes operation of train services, timetable planning, procurement of new rolling stock, construction of a new maintenance facility and reconstruction of Toronto Union Station's track and platforms.

The chosen team also will be responsible for electrifying parts of the GO Transit rail corridor, according to an IO press release.

The work is part of Ontario's CA$21.3 billion GO Regional Express Rail (RER) project, which is aimed at transforming GO Transit's commuter-rail system to a regional rapid transit system with more frequent service.

"We are eager to engage with a field of world-class partners for this new chapter of unprecedented transit building that will set our region up for success for generations to come," said Phil Verster, Metrolinx president and chief executive officer.

Meanwhile, IO and Metrolinx issued two additional RFQs to build new stations and related trackwork as part of GO RER.

The scope of these projects includes new station buildings or pavilions, trackbed and grading, new platforms and parking.

All the RFQs are available at merx.com.
