Metrolinx is begining construction work at its GO Transit rail and bus station in Aurora, Ontario, the agency announced Monday.

The project includes amenities to improve service and access. The changes are building toward two-way 15-minute service between Aurora and Union Station, Metrolinx officials said in a press release.

Improvements will include:

• a second track to allow for two-way train service at the Aurora GO Transit station and along much of the Barrie Line;

• a newly constructed west platform with barrier-free connections as well as pedestrian tunnels;

• pedestrian tunnels,  which previously were built in anticipation of this work will be extended to connect with the new west platform and will be open for customer use;

• a newly constructed passenger pick-up/drop-off area; and

• a new exit at Berczy Street to improve passenger access and the flow of traffic

Because the Aurora GO Station is a provincial and federal heritage property, the project is  being designed to maintain the integrity of the station building and preserve its heritage.

Expansion work is also underway at the Maple GO Station along the Barrie Line. New infrastructure is being built now to accommodate future service between Toronto and Barrie.

Increased GO Transit service is part of the GO Expansion program. Service will be provided every 15 minutes or earlier between Union Station and Bradford GO, and every 30 minutes up to the Allandale Waterfront GO Station.

Future customers arriving at the station by bike, bus, car, or foot will be able to access a new southeast and northeast platform structure to reach the west platform.
