Metrolinx issues RFQ for tunneling; SEPTA awards ADA improvements contract

Metrolinx and the Ontario government have issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for construction of the Yonge North subway extension tunnels.

The work involves designing the tunnels, supplying the tunnel boring machines and building the launch and extraction shafts that will be used to lower the machines into the ground and return them to the surface, Metrolinx officials said in a press release.

The RFQ also includes design and construction of the support walls for underground stations and emergency exit buildings, as well as relocation of the route's existing utilities.

The project will extend by 5 miles Toronto Transit Commission Line 1 service to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill.

Meanwhile, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has awarded a $6.5 million contract to Michael Baker International Inc. to provide architectural, design and construction-related services for a project to inprove accessibility at three subway stations.

The firm will provide services for the Logan, Wyoming and Hunting Park stations on the Broad Street Line to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, SEPTA officials said in a press release. Now the stations are accessible only by stairs.

The work calls for elevator installation, platform renovation, new signage, lighting and security cameras; and waterproofing, SEPTA officials said.

SEPTA will fund this project and other accessibility improvements with a $56 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration's All Stations Accessibility Program.
