Metrolinx this spring will roll out a "click-and-collect" grocery shopping service at GO Transit commuter-rail stations — marking the first time the service will be offered at transit stations in Canada.

The Toronto-area agency is working with Loblaw Cos. Ltd. to establish the service, which enables riders to shop online and pick up groceries when they arrive at their GO station.

Customers will place orders the night before and grab them on their afternoon trip home. For the first phase of the project, the so-called "PC Express" service will be available at five GO commuter-rail stops: the Bronte, Oakville, Clarkson, Rouge Hill and Whitby stations.

During the initial phase, Metrolinx will test different delivery methods. Groceries will be waiting in a special delivery truck, in lockers or in an enclosed kiosk, depending on the station.

After the initial phase, the service will expand to more GO stations.

"There will now be a new benefit to taking the GO train, with the ability to pick up groceries at five different stations through Loblaw's PC Express pickup service, with more to come," said Metrolinx President and Chief Executive Officer Phil Verster in a press release.

Meanwhile, Metrolinx is taking steps to introduce Wi-Fi service on all GO Transit vehicles. The agency plans to test Wi-Fi service on two GO trains and four GO buses.

The initial rollout will enable Metrolinx to examine service quality and collect feedback from transit users, according to a press release issued by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

Free Wi-Fi is available at the majority of GO stations and bus terminals across the system.
