Metrolinx and Vandyk Properties have signed an agreement that calls for upgrading the Mimico GO Transit station in Toronto as part of Ontario's transit-oriented community (TOC) development program.

The current station needs improvements to support growing ridership amid projected community growth, Metrolinx officials said in a blog post. Those improvements include two new station access points, underground parking spaces for vehicles and bicycles, a plaza with pick-up and drop-off facilities and a greenway path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Vandyk Properties and Metrolinx signed a 2019 agreement to develop the TOC at the station. Vandyk has been acquiring land around the station area since then, which presented the opportunity to make additional improvements to the station itself, officials said. The TOC will include affordable housing options.

Service on the Lakeshore West Line, on which Mimico is located, will be increased to provide trains every 15 minutes or less through Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program

The station was built in 1967 — the same year GO Transit was launched — and is a critical transit hub for those living in the Etobicoke neighborhood. Ridership is expected to triple in nine years.

Metrolinx will retain control over details of the project, such as station design and construction standards. A construction timeline is being developed.
