A consortium established to upgrade London’s underground rail system, Metronet recently awarded a $5.3 billion contract to Bombardier Transportation to supply rolling stock and signaling, and provide maintenance and project management during the next 15 years.
Bombardier plans to supply 1,738 cars and new signaling for the Victoria and Sub-Surface lines. Scheduled to be delivered between 2008 and 2015, the cars will be built at Bombardier’s Derby, U.K., facility, according to a prepared statement. Bombardier also plans to refurbish the District Line and build two pre-production trains for the Victoria Line.
Bombardier is an equal shareholder of the Metronet Rail BCV Holdings Ltd., along with WS Atkins PLC, Balfour Beatty, Seeboard Energy and Thames Water. The shareholders plan to invest $11 billion in the first seven years of Metronet’s 30-year project, which include upgrading, replacing and maintaining the system’s infrastructure.
