Milwaukee city officials entered into a 10-year contract with Smart City Media LLC to implement a digital kiosk system to support streetcar operations in downtown Milwaukee later this spring.

Thirty-five touch-screen kiosks, called CityPosts, will be installed along The Hop streetcar route, streetcar officials said in a press release.

The kiosks will post streetcar arrival times, transit connections, wayfinding and other city and visitor information, as well as provide free public Wi-Fi. The kiosks also will contain security cameras that will be integrated with the Milwaukee Police Department’s existing surveillance systems.

When not in use, the screens will display advertising, public service announcements and messages from government departments and local small businesses.

Smart City will own and maintain the kiosks at no cost, while providing the city with a share of the revenue generated from advertising.

The Hop launched in November 2018. During its first year of service, the streetcar logged 802,541 riders. Heading into February, the streetcar logged 967,257 riders. The Hop expects to welcome its 1 millionth rider today.
