The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has selected Kiewit Infrastructure Co. to build the first phase of the city's streetcar line, as well as the Lakefront Extension and an operations and maintenance facility.
Under the contract, Kiewit will be responsible for all construction activities, including installation of the rail, overhead contact system and streetcar stops, Milwaukee Streetcar officials said in a press release issued late last week. The contract is valued at $60 million, local media reported. Construction could begin as early as fall, according to the streetcar website.Kiewit was one of seven firms to bid on the construction."The company demonstrated a thorough understanding of Milwaukee’s project and will be able to work within the budget," Milwaukee Streetcar officials said.Kiewit rented office space in Milwaukee and will work with the city, businesses and property owners along the route as it plans and implements the construction process.Kiewit has worked on other urban rail projects, including the Regional Transportation District of Denver's Interstate 225 light-rail line, the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension and the 9-mile expansion of Dallas Area Rapid Transit's Orange Line light-rail route.
