Sound Transit June 19 named Marty Minkoff director of Sounder commuter rail department succeeding Lee Bullock, who resigned but plans to remain on the job until Minkoff’s on board, no later than Sept. 3.



Bullock joined Sound Transit Jan. 22, leaving Amtrak where he had served since 1973, most recently as vice president - freight railroad affairs.



"I did not fully appreciate the extent to which the portfolio reaches beyond just operations," said Bullock in his resignation letter to Sound Transit Executive Director Joni Earl. "As someone whose background is principally in operations, I simply did not anticipate that the construction management portion of the job would be as significant as it is."



Although Earl expressed disappointment in Lee’s departure she supports his decision.



"Lee has done an excellent job moving the project forward during his time here and I applaud his service and his commitment to stay until Marty is on board," she said.



Having most recently served as executive director of North San Diego County Transit Development Board, Minkoff will bring to Sound Transit a background in construction and capital project development, as well as commuter rail operations. Prior to his work there, he served Whatcom Transportation Authority in Bellingham, Wash., from 1990 to 1997.



"Marty’s capital planning and management skills, his knowledge of our region, and his extensive experience with commuter rail and other transit modes are big assets for this agency," said Earl.
