The Metropolitan Council yesterday announced that it has awarded the Aldridge-Parsons Joint Venture a $194.4 million contract to build and install systems for a 14.5-mile extension of the Green light-rail line in Minneapolis.
The contact calls for installation of overhead catenary lines, traction power and communication systems on the Southwest Light-Rail Transit (SWLRT) project, which will connect Eden Prairie to downtown Minneapolis and serve 16 stations in 2023.
With the award of the systems contract, 97 percent of SWLRT contracts have been committed, Met Council officials said in a press release.
The council is seeking $929 million, which is half the project's total cost, from the Federal Transit Administration through a full funding grant agreement. Council officials anticipate receiving the grant agreement in early 2020.
So far, the FTA has sent two letters of "no prejudice" to allow the council to begin a civil and systems contract. The letters are important because they allow early construction work on the project to be eligible for reimbursement upon award of a full funding grant agreement.
