Mitsubishi Electric/Super Steel partnership might lead to new jobs

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Super Steel Schenectady Inc. Feb. 11 announced plans to form a joint venture at Super Steel’s New York plant. Under partnership terms, Mitsubishi will commit engineering, investment and technical resources to Super Steel’s plant; Super Steel will dedicate a portion of its plant to meet Mitsubishi’s production requirements.

During the past three years, the companies have worked together to establish a production center for Mitsubishi’s rail propulsion systems. As a result, Mitsubishi moved technology from Japan to Schenectady. Today, Super Steel is building 20 propulsion systems monthly and plans to increase production to 40 units monthly.

These units are being shipped to a Bombardier Transportation plant in Plattsburgh, N.Y., for use in commuter cars being built for Long Island Rail Road.

Mitsubishi, Super Steel and Bombardier also joined forces on a contract proposal for 1,700 subway cars for New York City Transit. The contract is expected to be awarded in spring.
