Montreal's AMT outlines strategic plan for public transit

Montreal’s Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) has approved a strategic plan for public transit development by the year 2020, agency officials announced in a prepared statement.

The plan was developed with 3,000 commuters and with AMT partners, they said.

“The AMT’s strategic plan not only emphasizes transport infrastructure, it also proposes a series of real solutions to improve not only public transit service, but also quality of life for everyone in the greater Montreal area,” said AMT President and Chief Executive Officer Joel Gauthier.

The plan’s goal is to change the city’s commuting habits and create “smart, efficient public transit systems,” he said.

In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the plan includes extending the electrification of the train and bus network to encourage more commuters to choose public transit rather than automobile travel, officials said.
