Australia’s CityRail put forth Olympian effort in making its 1,280-mile passenger rail system accessible for visitors to the Olympic Games in Sydney this month.

Cubic Transportation Systems Australia Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp., installed 45 "Touchscreen" ticketing machines in 24 of CityRail’s 301 stations. The machines offer ticket-purchase instructions in 14 languages including English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Malay, and traditional and simplified Chinese.

The machines delivered were parts of two contracts: a $4.6 million contract for 25 machines in four stations as part of CityRail’s airport extension; and a $9 million contract to install 20 machines in 20 stations, as well as upgrade additional equipment.

Cubic is part of the Smartpos consortium, which is bidding to supply an intermodal smart card-based ticketing system, integrating Sydney’s rail, bus and ferry transport operations.
