New Jersey Transit has added contactless payment methods to its ticket vending machines in an initiative to modernize and upgrade the ticketing process.
The agency has installed 558 new ticket vending machines throughout the transit system, NJ Transit officials said in a press release. The contactless payment options include contactless cards and mobile wallets, which no longer requiring card insertion into the machine. The machines were also upgraded to run and print faster, as well as display information in an easier-to-read way.
Machine height has been adjusted to accommodate customers with disabilities, and audible and visual instructions are included. The changes are part of the Fare Modernization program which will introduce new handheld ticket validators for train crews and a NJ Transit fare card.
