New Jersey Transit July 11 added a new position to its human resource directory, appointing award-winning industrial designer Cesar Vergara its first chief designer.
Vergara, who has more than 20 years’ transit experience in North and South America, and in Europe, will oversee the design of NJ Transit locomotives, rail coaches, buses and facilities, with a special eye toward enhancing customers’ environment. The agency is preparing to receive more than 2,000 pieces of equipment by 2005.
"It is truly a coup for NJ Transit to have attracted a man of Cesar’s caliber to shepherd the future of the corporation’s look and feel," said Executive Director Jeffrey Warsh in a prepared statement.
Prior to joining NJ Transit, Vergara served at Walter Dorwin Teague Associates and worked on the new generation of Track Geometry Inspection Vehicles — including one NJ Transit purchased that’s been nominated for an international design award.
He also served 10 years as Amtrak’s chief designer, leading efforts on Superliner II, the Genesis engine, Surfliners, and United States Postal Service’s "Celebrate the Century Express." Vergara also was responsible for standardizing Amtrak’s graphics.
Other previous stints include chief designer at Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México and senior designer with Henry Dreyfuss Associates in New York.
