New Jersey Transit’s board recently approved three contracts totaling $90 million for final design and construction on the Newark City Subway Broad Street Extension and modernization work on the existing subway’s ventilation system.



The one-mile extension will link Newark Penn and Newark Broad Street stations. The project includes constructing new stations, track beds, duct embankments and signal systems, and installing a catenary system to provide power to light-rail vehicles.



The extension would serve the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Bears minor league baseball stadium, a museum and the downtown business district.



Daidone Electric received an $18.5 million contract to improve tunnel ventilation in the existing subway as part of a $188 million subway modernization project. NJ Transit plans to use more modern light-rail cars and a more advanced signal system in the subway, install track and a new catenary system, improve accessibility at four stations, and complete a one-mile extension to Belleville and Bloomfield, N.J.



The board also amended a contract with Anselmi and DeCicco to finish relocating a gas line along the Newark Broad Street Extension alignment. The $700,000 amendment would increase the contract value to $4 million.



The projects are being funded by the Federal Transit Administration and State Transportation Trust Fund. The Newark City Subway Broad Street Extension is scheduled to open in 2005.
