New Jersey Transit has awarded a contract to HNTB to begin the design process for the new Walter Rand Transportation Center (WRTC).
The contract calls for HNTB to provide conceptual design, preliminary and final engineering and construction assistance services. NJ Transit's board approved the first phase for conceptual development and preliminary engineering at a cost of $4.4 million.
Additionally, the concept and design will incorporate future transit developments in Camden and explore the potential for new retail, office, housing and hospitality opportunities to foster mixed-use development and support community investments, NJ Transit officials said in a news release.
Constructed in 1989 and owned by the agency, the WRTC is the largest transportation hub in Camden and serves River Line light-rail route and 26 NJ Transit bus lines. The hub also provides connectivity to the Port Authority Transit Corp.'s Speedline subway, Greyhound bus services and the South Jersey Transportation Authority’s shuttle.
