Rail News: Passenger Rail
New Jersey Transit is in the midst of a two-week initiative to conduct aerial survey work on its rail lines in northern and central New Jersey. The agency will use the information to improve emergency response capabilities and update its system maps.
The survey work is being performed in a specially equipped helicopter using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, a Global Positioning System-controlled laser scan that will create a three-dimensional image of NJ Transit’s rights of way. The agency will integrate the images into its Geographic Information System, which NJ Transit uses for planning, training and operational purposes.
