NJ Transit hires counter-terrorism training consultant

New Jersey Transit March 14 awarded Kroll Inc. a $1 million contract to train the agency’s 10,500 employees to recognize and respond to possible terrorist incidents.

Kroll and NJ Transit officials are finalizing a customized curriculum that will include lectures, workshops and mock-terrorist-attack exercises, and be tailored in length and depth to the needs of specific employee groups. Police officers and managers — including bus supervisors and rail superintendents — will receive eight hours of training, while bus drivers, conductors and other public-contact employees will participate in four-hour training sessions.

U.S. Department of Justice offers grants to state and local agencies for similar initiatives, said Jeff Schlanger, chief operating officer of Kroll’s Security Service Group, in a prepared statement, adding that President Bush’s proposed budget includes $3.5 billion for training and equipment for first responders including police officers, firefighters and emergency management personnel.

NJ Transit officials plan to conduct the training over a six-to-eight month period beginning in April.
