New Jersey Transit recently began phasing in 38 new ticket vending machines in all Main and Bergen County line stations, enabling passengers to purchase tickets around the clock.
The new machines will not require customers to relinquish credit or debit cards when purchasing tickets — passengers insert the card and immediately pull it out to complete the transaction. The new machines also will accept bills more quickly, according to a prepared statement.
Also, trips that used to require multiple tickets will be replaced with a single ticket that will list transfers to the ultimate destination and be punched by a conductor. The new tickets are credit-card sized with a magnetic strip on the back to enable passengers to swipe them through turnstiles at the new Secaucus transfer station, which opens for weekend service in the fall.
After Oct. 1, passengers boarding trains without a ticket will be issued a $5 surcharge if ticket vending machines are available, or if the ticket office at their boarding station is open.
All machines are expected to be operational by Aug. 1.
