NJ Transit issues contracts to replace station roof, bridges and inspection vehicle

Yesterday, New Jersey Transit’s board approved a handful of contracts for projects aimed at improving system safety and reliability.
Board members awarded a $3 million contract to G&M Eastern Contracting Inc. to install new roofing and drainage systems at Newark Penn Station, as well as conduct associated masonry repairs on select rail platforms. The project is scheduled to be complete next year.
The board also issued an $856,293 million contract to HNTB Corp., $644,483 million contract to Hardesty & Hanover L.L.P and $566,287 contract to TranSystems Corp. to conduct in-depth structural inspections on a total of 15 undergrade bridges. The inspections will augment annual in-house inspections conducted by NJ Transit staff and help the agency develop a repair and replacement program.
Under an additional $975,000 contract approved yesterday, HNTB will provide design, engineering and construction assistance services for the replacement of two undergrade bridges on the Raritan Valley Line in Plainfield, N.J. NJ Transit plans to award a subsequent contract to replace the bridges, repair the masonry abutments and increase the bridges’ vertical clearance. The project is part of a long-term program to replace all 13 rail bridges in the city. NJ Transit currently is working on the ninth replacement.
Finally, the board inked a $1.95 million deal with ARVA Industries Inc. to supply a catenary inspection vehicle to the agency. The vehicle will replace an older unit NJ Transit owns, and will be used to inspect, maintain and repair more than 95 miles of overhead wire. The vehicle is expected to be delivered late next year.
