To enhance safety for pedestrians traversing the Augusta Street rail crossing on the North Jersey Coast Line, New Jersey Transit settled on a solution that agency officials believe is anything but pedestrian.

On Friday, NJ Transit Executive Director George Warrington, U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone, state Assemblyman John Wisniewski and South Amboy Mayor Jack O’Leary officially opened the South Amboy pedestrian overpass and plaza. The $4.8 million project comprises a 16-foot-wide pedestrian overpass with two elevators linking an existing parking lot with a new transit plaza.

The project’s second phase, which is in the design phase, includes a new station building and high-level platforms. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2006.

The overpass project wouldn’t have been possible without $3.8 million in federal funding, Wisniewski said in a prepared statement.
