NJ Transit opens rebuilt Montclair station

On Friday, NJ Transit marked the opening of the newly reconstructed Upper Montclair Station.

Built in 1892, the station sustained extensive fire damage in 2006. The new station features a restaurant, public restrooms and a waiting area, and maintains the original building’s historic architecture.

In September 2007, NJ Transit’s board approved a 10-year lease with three additional five-year options for the restaurant space. The restaurant owner’s responsibilities included planning, designing, financing, building, operating and maintaining a 2,800 square-foot restaurant and station building, NJ Transit officials said.

The $1 million project was funded privately through the restaurant's developer and fire insurance proceeds.
