New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy last week announced the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded an additional $425 million in transportation dollars to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) for transportation projects as part of the federal August redistribution process.
Each year, the August redistribution is an opportunity for the FHWA to increase spending authority to state departments of transportation based on the availability of unused funds.
The $425 million in redistributed spending authority provided to New Jersey is the highest amount the state has ever received. Ultimately, the additional spending will be split, with $315 million for New Jersey Transit projects and $110 million for NJDOT projects, according to a press release issued by Murphy's office.
Rail-related projects that will benefit from the additional funding include:• $7.9 million to complete the the Long Branch Station Pedestrian Tunnel project. The tunnel will reconnect the east and west halves of Long Branch, which are now divided by an above-ground rail alignment;• $33.8 million for the Delco Lead, a project to construct a rail storage location at a strategic location along the Northeast Corridor that is not flood-prone; and• $5 million for the Hoboken Yard improvements project, which includes design and construction of inspection pits for multilevel rail cars.
