NJ Transit riders can text security concerns

On Wednesday, New Jersey Transit unveiled a new security initiative that encourages riders to send a text message to transit police to report suspicious activity or unattended packages.

The “Text Tips” or “Text Against Terror” initiative will complement the agency’s existing security hotline, which was established in 2003, transit officials said in a prepared statement.

“As the eyes and ears of the NJ Transit system, our customers and employees are the first lien of defense in the war against terror, so it is critical that we all remain vigilant and aware of our surroundings,” Transit Police Chief Christopher Trucillo said. “This new initiative enables us to harness the prevalence of text messaging among our customers to enhance the security of our transit system.”
