Rail News: Passenger Rail

NJ Transit taps MSU campus for new Boonton Line station

Boonton Line and Montclair Branch passengers heading to midtown-Manhattan in spring on New Jersey Transit's new Montclair Connection will have another station to consider for their commute.

NJ Transit's board recently amended its contract — not to exceed $5 million — with J.H. Reid, enabling the contractor to build an 800-foot center-island high-level platform, and reposition track and overhead catenary wires across from Monclair State University's Yogi Berra Stadium.

NJ Transit plans in the near future to award a separate design-build contract for the handicapped-accessible station and a 1,000-space parking deck.

The station would serve as a key transfer point for NJ Transit's expanded MidTOWN DIRECT service to New York City's Penn Station — beginning in spring 2002 — on the Boonton Line and Montclair Branch.
