Rail News: Passenger Rail

NJ Transit to expand late-night service on Newark City Subway

advertisement

On Jan. 8, New Jersey Transit will begin providing four additional late-night trips on daily Newark City Subway trains.

The last light-rail car will arrive at Grove Street Station in Bloomfield at 12:10 a.m., compared with 10:01 p.m. under the current schedule.

The Federal Railroad Administration recently approved the agency’s request to modify a waiver governing freight service along a 1,100-foot section of shared track between the Branch Brook Park and Grove Street stations.

NJ Transit previously was prohibited from operating light-rail service to the Silver Lake and Grove Street stations between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. daily, when Norfolk Southern Railway trains had exclusive use of the track. The new agreement also does not require NJ Transit to store equipment overnight at Newark Penn Station.

In exchange for the longer operating hours, NS will be allowed to use the shared track any time during off-peak hours.
