New Jersey Transit’s board recently approved a three-year agreement to operate a demonstration express rail service between New York City and Atlantic City. The agency will operate the service under contract with the Atlantic City Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and Atlantic City Express Service (ACES), a partnership between Atlantic City hotels.

Beginning in 2007, NJ Transit will operate 18 express trains Friday afternoon through Sunday night between Penn Station and Atlantic City Rail Terminal. The trip will take about two-and-a-half hours. The agency expects to serve about 1,100 people each weekend.

NJ Transit will purchase eight multi-level cars and lease four locomotives from Amtrak to operate the express service. Under agreement terms, ACES and CRDA will reimburse the agency for capital equipment and operating costs. In addition, ACES will work with NJ Transit on schedule design, pricing, stopping patterns, reservations, on-board services and marketing promotions.
