New Jersey Transit will replace all the windows on its multilevel rail cars in revenue service over the next three  years, slashing in half the original timeline of six to eight years.

Materials needed to replace the windows have been ordered for the entire multilevel II rail-car fleet. Those installations are anticipated to wrap up by Dec. 31, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.

Window replacement on the entire fleet of nearly 400 multilevel I and II rail cars will be completed by April 2028, they said. In total, more than 13,000 windows will be replaced.

A study by the Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation helped NJ Transit officials determine that refurbishing the existing windows was not an option.
