NJ Transit to upgrade Timera workforce management system

New Jersey Transit Feb. 19 chose to implement Timera Inc.’s EWM™ for Transportation solution to manage crew dispatching for its more than 1,250 train and engine employees.

Since 1992, NJ Transit has been using Timera’s mainframe workforce management system, which enables all employees to have real-time access to crew and operations information.

EWM for Transportation incorporates graphical user interfaces, Web-enabled employee portals and expanded browser functionalities, designed to help increase efficiencies in communicating crew needs system-wide.

"Even the most-experienced crew managers can be overwhelmed by complex union agreements and ever-changing day-to-day crew scheduling needs," said Alex Baker, NJ Transit director of systems development and analysis for rail operations, in a prepared statement, adding that he expects NJ Transit employees will "be able to define the agreement rules used to dispatch crews and significantly reduce human error and personal interpretation of the rules."

The system also is designed to keep a record of the reasons behind where and why assignments were made at any given time, which would provide a fact-based history to settle possible disputes.
