A New Jersey Transit train operator was killed and at least 20 passengers were injured this morning when the train they were on ran into a tree that had fallen across the tracks on the River Line, according to a report from local news outlet NBC Philadelphia.
The station reported the incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Eastern time in Mansfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed in a social media post on X that the train operator died and that an investigation has been launched into the accident.
The River Line service is suspended in both directions between Florence and Trenton stations due to the downed tree. A substitute bus service is being provided, NJ Transit officials said in a service announcement.
