NTSB investigating CTA train derailment at O'Hare

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials have begun looking into the cause of yesterday's Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train crash at O'Hare International Airport.

Thirty-two people were injured when an eight-car Blue Line train jumped the track and came to rest on escalators leading to airport terminals shortly before 3 a.m.

The Chicago Tribune reported this morning that federal investigators were looking into the possibility that the train operator fell asleep at the controls and whether an automatic braking system was operating properly.

"The train actually climbed over the last stop, jumped up on the sidewalk and then went up the stairs and the escalators," said Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago in a news report by Chicago's NBC affiliate.

Blue Line service was scheduled to be operating today, with shuttle buses carrying riders between the Rosemont station and the airport, CTA spokesman Brian Steele announced yesterday at a press conference.
