NY State awarded $21.4 million in federal grants for public transportation

Federal Transit Administrator Jennifer Dorn June 13 announced three grants totaling $21.4 million for public transportation projects in New York State.

Although a $1.48 million grant will go to Westchester Department of Transportation for an intermodal transportation center linking intercity and local bus service, taxis and parking, the remaining grants will be given to New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

A $14.95 million grant is slated for design activities related to the proposed East Side Access Project, which would provide Long Island Railroad (LIRR) commuters direct access to Manhattan’s east side. In addition to relieving congestion at Penn Station — currently LIRR’s only stop in Manhattan — the extension also would provide passengers a one-seat ride to Grand Central Station.

The other $4.98 million grant would be used for preliminary engineering work on MTA’s proposed Second Avenue Subway, which would alleviate overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue Line that currently is the only rapid transit service to travel the entire length of Manhattan’s east side. The proposed line also would reduce travel times and improve accessibility to the east side.
