NYCT, BART plan to use plastic ties

New York City Transit and Bay Area Rapid Transit recently signed contracts with U.S. Plastic Lumber Corp. (USPL) to supply Duraties® recycled composite railroad ties.

Duraties are composed of recycled plastic and fiberglass, and designed to provide durability and strength, and a greater life expectancy compared with wood ties.

Between 10 and 15 million wood ties are replaced annually in the United States, providing an opportunity for USPL to gain market share, said Chief Executive Officer Mark Alsentzer in a prepared statement.
