NYCT appoints Prendergast as Roberts' successor

Just one day after MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) President Howard Roberts announced his resignation, the agency has appointed a new chief. Thomas Prendergast will take over the agency’s top post on Dec. 1.
Currently chief executive officer of the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, or TransLink, the 57-year-old Prendergast has more than 30 years of transportation industry experience, including a previous stint with NYCT. He began his career at the Chicago Transit Authority, then worked for the Federal Transit Administration before joining NYCT in 1982.
Prendergast rose through the ranks at the agency, eventually serving as senior vice president of subways from 1990 to 1994. Between 1994 and 2000, he was president of MTA Long Island Rail Road.
He joined TransLink in July 2009 after working in the private sector for an engineering and construction management firm for eight years.
