advertisement
Metropolitan Transportation Authority - New York City Transit’s (NYCT) board July 31 awarded project partners Alstom and Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. a $961 million contract to design and manufacture 660 subway cars.
In addition to spare parts, special tools and training, the contract also includes two options totaling about 1,000 cars. If both options were exercised, the contract would total $2.34 billion.
NYCT plans to use the new cars to replace R32, R38, R40 and R42 cars, as well as for expansion purposes.
Delivery of the base order is slated to take place between 2006 and 2007.
