NYCT reopens 72nd Street subway station

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) late last week reopened the 72nd Street Station on the B and C rail lines following an extensive repair project.

The project involved fixing deteriorating infrastructure and installing digital signage with real-time service information.

Crews repaired concrete slabs and steel columns, conducted waterproofing in leakage areas, cleaned and repaired rusted infrastructure, replaced floor slabs and power-washed concrete floors and wall tiles, NYCT officials said in a news release.

Workers also installed new countdown clocks, illuminated guardrails and security cameras at the station, which is located in Manhattan's Upper West Side.

"This station is nearly 90 years old but after these much-needed repairs to its structure and modern enhancements to bring it into the 21st century, it will be a completely new and different experience for the thousands of customers who use this station regularly," said NYCT President Andy Byford.

NYCT is repairing infrastructure and making functional improvements at subway stations in all five New York City boroughs.

In May, Byford announced a new subway station initiative that organizes stations in the same geographic area under group station managers who are accountable for "every part of the station environment," including cleanliness and customer service, NYCT officials said.

That initiative came as part of Byford's $40 billion Fast Forward plan to modernize NYCT's subway, bus and paratransit services.
